MEIA Expresses Concern Over PBS' Reliance on Imported Content

The Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA) notes with concern the increasing reliance of the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) on imported formats, like reality and talent shows, and dubbed foreign productions, such as the recently announced Turkish drama in Maltese.

As Malta’s national broadcaster, PBS carries the responsibility of reflecting and strengthening our cultural identity, supporting the local cultural sector, and ensuring that taxpayer funds are invested in ways that benefit Malta’s long-term interests. The current approach risks undermining this mission.

PBS was established to serve the Maltese public and safeguard our cultural heritage. Prioritising imported content over Maltese productions weakens our national voice and limits the opportunities for future generations to experience authentic Maltese stories on screen.

Local writers, actors, directors, and production crews are frequently overlooked or underpaid, while significant public funds are directed into foreign IP. While we are aware that foreign formats do generate jobs and opportunities for local talent and crew, we must underline the importance of investing in our own IP, and in our own voices as creators and storytellers.

Investment in Maltese productions generates employment, strengthens the sector, and keeps public funds within the national economy. Moreover, locally produced content has the potential to be exported, positioning Malta as a contributor to international cultural exchange rather than only a consumer of foreign material, while presenting Maltese talent on the international platform.

Foreign productions provide limited long-term value for PBS. Locally produced works, on the other hand, build a lasting archive that can be re-broadcast, preserved, and shared internationally, ensuring long-term return on investment.

PBS must ensure a more balanced allocation of resources, with greater support directed toward Maltese productions. But most importantly, PBS needs a long-term vision that puts the local voice at its centre. By doing so, PBS will be fulfilling its public service role, supporting Maltese professionals, and contributing to a stronger cultural and economic framework for the country.

MEIA remains committed to working with PBS and national stakeholders to develop a broadcasting strategy that reflects Malta’s identity and ensures the best use of public resources.
