Statement on the Resignation of Minister Clayton Bartolo and Appointment of Minister Ian Borg

The Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA), has been working closely with the Ministry of Tourism, particularly in matters concerning the Film Industry, and the Malta Film Commission. Our hope is that with the new appointment of Minister Ian Borg, this leadership will seriously prioritise ethical governance and restore public trust in the Ministry. This is especially so given the ongoing challenges within the Film Commission regarding transparency and accountability, as well as questions raised on sponsorship distribution processes through MTA.

We urge Minister Borg to address the serious concerns raised in the recent National Audit Office (NAO) Report on the Malta Film Commission, regarding missing financial documentation and inadequate staffing within the Film Commission. It is crucial that these issues are resolved to ensure that funding mechanisms operate efficiently, transparently and ethically.

As we move forward, MEIA remains committed towards a positive collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, for the fostering of a sustainable tourism sector that supports the local creative sectors adequately. We look forward to working with Minister Borg to implement necessary reforms that enhance transparency, accountability, improve communication, and ensure that our industry receives the support it deserves without delays or complications, the effects of which the effects may at times be irreparable to the individuals and to the industry at large.
